General purpose of the position: To advance our efforts to promote higher welfare practices for animals in food production, with a focus on a transition to cage-free housing systems for egg-laying hens in South Africa, by working in partnership with food industry stakeholders, including food manufacturers, food retailers, restaurants, supermarket chains, and egg and meat producers.
Identify food and hospitality companies in South Africa with high levels of egg production or egg procurement (such as the country’s top restaurant chains, food manufacturers, hotels, food service providers, top supermarket chains). Build a database of such companies, including contact details for key decision makers;
Lead HSI’s work regarding animal welfare procurement policies with the food and hospitality industries in South Africa, and work with companies on implementation of these policies;
Lead HSI’s work with egg producers in South Africa, as well as industry and government ministries and associations, and work with producers to shift to higher welfare production systems and practices;
In conjunction with and direction from HSI staff, organise events for the food industry throughout South Africa. HSI will help recruit international speakers/experts for the events. The consultant will be expected to manage logistics on the ground and to encourage relevant local stakeholders to attend. Examples of events include technical workshops for egg producers on cage-free egg production and animal welfare roundtables for food company executives;
Help draft campaign materials, which may include blogs, media pieces, fact sheets and other outreach materials; and
Represent HSI at food industry conferences and events
Report back on meetings, activities and progress by completing and submitting a weekly highlights report to the HSI Farm Animals Director.

Education and experience
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years of experience.
A minimum five years of experience working within the food industry in any capacity.
Experience working directly with large institutional buyers of food or knowledge of their procurement systems and policies a plus.
Experience working in animal protection, preferably farm animal protection, a plus.
Experience working with media a plus.
A strong commitment to improving animal welfare in South Africa’s food systems required.
Necessary knowledge, skills and abilities:
Oral and written fluency in English.
Must be able and willing to travel within South Africa as needed.
Excellent public speaking skills.
Ability to work independently, take initiative, and maintain good communication with HSI’s team around the world.
